Remembering Maui, Hawaii: Places to See Around Maui

During November 2019, my family and I made an eight-day trip to Maui, Hawaii. It was actually our first time visiting the island of Maui. We left Sacramento airport at around 7:30 am, and we arrived there after six hours. We are actually three hours ahead, so when we got there, it was only 9:30 am.

We took a thirty-minute Lyft drive from the airport to our hotel, and it was the nicest drive ever. No traffic at all. The views on our way are breathtaking, and I couldn’t even decide when to turn off my camera because I didn’t want to miss anything.

Our Accommodations

We decided to stay at the Napili Kai Beach Resort. On our arrival to the hotel, we got to check-in right away. The hotel room was big, nice, and clean. It had a big bed, nice shower, and a balcony. They also had a mini kitchen with a big refrigerator, an electric stove, eating utensils, and condiments. The hotel felt like home.

The best thing about our accommodations was that the beach was just a few steps from our hotel room. We could actually hear the sound of the waves from our hotel room. My husband preferred to turn off the air conditioner and open the screen to feel the fresh air at night.

There was also a restaurant inside our hotel. They served the best Hawaiian breakfast ever! It was my first time experiencing the famous loco moco, and it will always be included in my favorite breakfast meals. Loco moco is made up of burger patty, rice, and gravy with a biscuit on the top. It was the best loco moco ever.

Since the beach was so close to our hotel room, we were able to spend a lot of time at the water.  We spent few hours a day at the beach and the swimming pool. Our beach resort even had rentals for paddle boarding and floating.

On top of everything I mentioned, this resort has weekly activities like lei making and a concert. It’s great if you have kids because they even have a seasonal club for kids ages six to ten. They can go and do some activities for a couple of hours, and you can trust that your kids are being supervised. There’s so much going on, and you can take advantage if you decide to stay there too.

What We Did During Our Trip

During our stay, we wanted to take advantage of the family-friendly attractions around Maui. We were able to go places like the Maui Tropical Plantation. The Plantation was just a thirty-minute drive from our hotel. The Plantation is sixty acres of working farmland, and it’s beautiful. The place was  full of plants and flowers. They also offered a paid tour of the place during which a cart will take you around the area, and you learn all about the various crops that are grown on the farm such as sugarcane and pineapple.  They also have a nice and big shop for souvenirs, restaurants, and zip-line services.

We also went to the aquarium where we watched the divers feed the sharks and fishes. It was an awesome experience. The aquarium was not that big, but they had lots of different attractions that will make your visit fun and memorable. Not to mention, they have souvenir shop inside and a restaurant.

Our trip to ‘lao Valley State Monument, which is just 30 minutes away from our accommodations, was interesting too. Official trails are minimal, but it does have a paved walk through the forest that is about a half mile long. The ‘lao valley is lush and full of plant life which would make for a great walk.  However, this place is the second wettest place in Hawaii as the summit of the valley receives an average of over an inch of rain per day. So, unfortunately, it was actually raining when we got there, though we still enjoyed our time.

Things for You to Do in Maui

There’s even more to do in Maui beyond what we did. There are many places to consider if you want to go hiking or sightseeing. The Haleakala Crater is a popular place for tourists because it can be so beautiful. Haleakala is a dormant volcano in Maui, and it’s actually Maui’s highest point. If you can manage to get there during sunrise or sunset, it’s supposed to be amazing. There’s an observatory at the top too.

Another great place to visit for the sights is the Pipiwai Trail which takes to you to the base of Waimoku Falls. You can take the almost two-mile trail through a diverse forest that includes a large bamboo section at the end. There are little pools throughout to enjoy as well as the major waterfall.

These aren’t the only trails you can take either. There are several parks around Maui. If you want some real sights, you can shop around for a helicopter ride over the island or take a  sunset dinner cruise.

One place that you might consider visiting if you’re interested in marine life is Molokini Crater. Molokini is a volcanic caldera and a great place for snorkeling. It’s located a few miles south of Maui’s shore, and there is a lot to see under the water. It’s also a famous place for scuba diving if you’d like to go even deeper. There are many boats around Maui that can take you there. If you’re looking to just relax by the water, and you don’t have our luck with hotel rooms, there are many, many beaches to choose from. One such beach is Hamoa Beach which is a popular one because it is great for relaxing and surfing. But you can always check with the local guides to find out which beach you are closest to.

Maui is a rich and beautiful place full of sights and family-friendly fun. The list of things to do is endless, especially if you enjoy relaxing or hiking. What I really enjoyed the most in Maui, Hawaii was the beautiful beach and the weather. I hope to visit the island again in the future, and I would encourage anyone else to visit too.

We haven’t visited Maui just yet and your post gives me #wanderlust. We haven’t booked a trip in over one year and gosh, how I miss travelling! With all this uncertainty and overall craziness I have no idea what destination to book, except for maybe Tulum since we’re both double jabbed with Pfizer. Maui looks amazing, I just want to take a dip in the water and then relax in the sun with a good book. Did you book your room on or on the resort’s website?
